The Athenaeum Hotel is a historic property praised for its stunning views, charming atmosphere, and generally well-maintained grounds. However, recent reviews highlight concerns regarding porch availability, inconsistent room amenities, and a lack of responsiveness from management. The property is clearly popular for events like weddings, contributing to a lively atmosphere.
We just had our daughter‘s wedding over Labor Day weekend at this venue. The experience was a 10 out of 10! The views were stunning, the rooms were spotless and comfortable, the staff was extremely friendly and attentive, the food was outstanding, the transportation to and from the Hall of Philosophy by the drivers was excellent, The places to take Wedding related photos were unbelievable, and we would choose this site again for future weddings! Thank you for making this experience so rewarding and extra special for our Family and friends!
Great views and love the private community down here. If we would come back it wouldn’t be here. While we were packing up we saw a pair of boxers in the corner of the room that didn’t belong to us. There was also an inch of dust on the fan. When we brought up the lack of care that this place deserves, the front desk clerk just said, “oh okay” and was unphased by it. You can tell this place was dearly loved but if you can’t pick up past guests clothing, change the AC filter, or clean the fans you wonder if the sheets are even clean on the bed.
We are long time Chautauquans who have stayed at the Athenaeum many times. Despite the cramped rooms, sloping floors, and high price ($350/night in season) it has some 19th Century charm. But its only amenity is a large front porch with rocking chairs and a magnificent view of the lake -- when it's available. But that is the problem. The largest part of the porch -- with the rockers and the view -- is often closed for private parties. In past years, that has been the case at least once a week. This year it was closed for a good part of the afternoon 3 of the 4 days we were there, including one day when it was closed from 3pm to 9pm, during which time there was only one hour when anyone from the "private party" was there. I understand that in the drive for the Almighty Dollar, the incentive to reserve your singular amenity for a private function may outweigh the obligation you owe to a couple paying a mere $350/night, but if you choose to stay here, be aware that if you're an independent traveller, making you feel welcome is not the Athenaeum's priority. By the way, when I tried to bring this to the attention of management, I was given an email address. And when I wrote, I was not given the courtesy of a response. So, consider that as well.
A premium double room had no mirror except a small one far above the bathroom sink. When I asked for a full length mirror I was told that housekeeping had no spare mirrors. When I asked why a premium room did not contain this simple amenity, I was told that some of the rooms did have mirrors but that there were not enough for every room. No apology or concern was expressed. The shower in the room was a small, pre-fab plastic unit, with no grab bar and no mat on the floor. Given that the average age of guests appeared to be well over 70, with many using canes or walkers, this seemed unacceptably dangerous.
We have stayed here several times. Our room was very nice, beautiful view. I definitely recommend making reservations for the Heirloom restaurant for your meals, the food is amazing!
Super nicely maintained old Hotel. Rooms very clean and plenty large enough for 2 people. Our room didn't have much of a view but the veranda and grounds offered spectacular views. Several weddings taking place during our stay. Well coordinated and actually very entertaining for a people watcher like me.
We were on vacation, but I offer feedback as an organizational consultant. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Athenaeum! The location is unparalleled. The staff is consistently excellent and very well managed. The rooms are very comfortable despite the age of the building. An area of improvement: Let the staff especially car valets and waiters offer their personal Venmo for tips. Not all valets or wait staff are equal in quality of service. As a former Human Resources executive I have never been fond of "the peanut butter approach" to compensation where all staff earn equally. I prefer to reward excellent service, and you should also.
This hotel is absolutely oozing with rich history everywhere you look. The grand doorways and high ceilings are like no other. Tall windows line every room with beautiful handcarved molding! Staircase boast daintily throughout the hotel. Pieces of history are literally stuck in time as you walk around this historic gem! This gorgeous hotel is absolutely amazing and is like nothing you will ever see! Not to mention, the staff are so kind and helpful! Very respectful! 100 out of 10 you must come and see all this hotel and neighboring properties have to offer!
